Yoh all,
I've got a GUS (not the MAX yet) and have Microsoft's ADPCM drivers
installed for Compression of AUDIO. I don't have any software however
which uses these drivers when recording WAV file's, so I can't
compress.
At work I have a SB 16ASP (don't kill me, it's my boss's fault) and an
SB program which does use the ADPCM driver. Is there something like it
for the GUS?
Thanks all and happy GUSSING!!!

Subject: Computer Music bibliography
There is a bibliography on synthesizers, midi, computer and electronic
music that I have collected from various sources. I have tried to bring
some structure into it, but not all books will fit into a single subject.
NOTE: I haven't read these books, and the comments are from other people.
The latest version of this file can be obtained by ftp from ftp.cs.ruu.nl
[131.211.80.17] in pub/MIDI/DOC/bibliography or by mail from
mail-server@cs.ruu.nl (send a message with HELP in the body). From the
mail-server the filename without pub/ should be used.
The latest monthly version is also available in the various news.answers
archives around the world, in music/midi/bibliography.

Subject: GUS and System Shock
For the most part, the GUS seems to work native-mode with System Shock,
but I've been noticing some oddities. Every now and then, I start
hearing random instruments in the background! It seems to occur
sometimes, when sound fx are supposed to be played. The only other time
I've seen this happen with the GUS is when I load MegaEm, and only then
with two games I've tried (Dragon's Lair, which uses SB, and works fine
with SBOS, and World of Xeen, which uses MT-32 music and SB sound fx).
Has anyone else encountered this?
BTW, I've encountered no problems like this if I tell System Shock to use
my Reveal SC500 for sound fx, and just use the GUS for the music.
Thanks!

Are you implying that the GUS drivers run on a PowerPC inside SoftWindows?
I didn't think so. SoftWindows is way more limited than OS/2 at running
Windows programs, let alone VxD's.

Yup... another guy. BTW, it's not just MKII. ALL extensive DOS4GW
games cannot run with GUS (or even any sound card?) Qemm 7 (maybe 6?)
and a disk cache loaded. I wrote to Quaterdeck... nothing there,
they say it's the program who is not well written. Well, if OMF,
DOOM, MKII, Heretic, Descent or not well written, what is?!? With
EMM386 of course, there is not problem, everybody make there
programs to run with MS crap, of course. Smartdrv and Mouse are
about the only good thing they made up to date.
Nway, my solution? Run HIMEM.SYS (with smartdrv if desired)...
make 2 or 3 boot config.
See ya!

Subject: GUS problems with Doom/Doom2/Heretic
First, here's my setup . . .
Regular GUS, set up for 240,3,3,15,5 (although I've already tried this as
240,3,3,7,5, and a few other combos)
Reveal SC500, SBPro set up for 220,7,1, WSS set up for 530,11,0 (but that's
usually not active), GMidi set up for 330,2(9), and Sony CD-ROM set up
for 360 (PHEW!)
Quantum Hardcard II/EZ 240
Some (I forget which) local bus IDE/floppy/ser-par/game card
S3 805 (I think) local bus VGA
CPU is AMD486dx2/80
My problem is tht I'm having trouble getting the GUS to work properly
with Doom/Doom2/Heretic. The version of Doom is 1.2, and sound is pretty
bad: music is draggy and slow, sound fx don't sound seem to vibrate
(instead of kaboom, I hear kaboooooooooooomooomoom). Doom2 is worse
(both version 1.666 and 1.9). I hear sound fx, and there might be
music. The problem is TONS and TONS and TONS of static drowning out
everything!
This happens, BTW, even if I remove the Reveal sound card. I'm wondering
if the problem might be a conflict with the Hardcard: anyone tried that
combo? Thanks!

Hi All,
Just thought I'd give a tip for people who are having problems with this
wonderfully innovative piece of software:
In your system.ini, change DMABUFFERS to equal 20-30. I think GUS setup
software defaults that to 150. This seems to help the problem quite nicely.
Give it a go, and tell me if it helps!
Alek.

Subject: Internet Phone with GUS
Has anyone besides me had a problem with GUS locking up after the first 3 or
so seconds of using the iphone by vocaltec. I went out and purchased a true
sblaster pro and the problem went away. My friend has a Gravis MAX and he
has no problems. Im running the 3.59 drivers and wfw with 8 meg ram. Any
suggestions would be great!
I have a regular GUS with 1 Meg Memory and 3.59 Software and WFW 3.11 on MS Dos
6.20 and am using internet phone 1.5 on a 386-33 with 8Megs memory.
Basically I have the same problem as outlined by two earlier appends.
Initially I get audio but its distorted and shaky. Then inet phone stops
responding and I have to reboot. So I guess we all have the same problems.
Does anyone out there have internet phone working OK?
Give us some details.....

Subject: Iphone fix: Here it is...
Ok, I mailed vocaltec, and here is their answer to the Iphone/GUS problem...
1. Choose the Help/About option and check for the UltraSound driver
version under ** WaveOut Devices section.
2. If the UltraSound driver version is earlier then 5.48 than a new
driver must be installed.
The latest patch of Gravis UltraSound (you can find it at:
archive.orst.edu at pub\gravis\patch) contains a new driver version - 5.48,
and some utilities to control buffers size.
3. After the UltraSound driver version 5.48 is installed run the driver
setup from Control Panel\Drivers\UltraSound Audio Driver\Setup and set the
"Playback DMA" buffer size and the "Record DMA" buffer size to a value
lower then 3000. (for example: 2944).
4. Run Internet Phone after reloading Windows and enjoy chatting without
hanging your system!
That's straight from them. I'm not home, so I dunno if it works yet.

Subject: MIDI in Sound Station quit on me
I don't get it. MIDI was working fine in Sound Station for Windows
before. Ever since I put in a second HDD, though, I get an error that
reads something to the effect of:
Sound Station has caused a general fault error in ???.dll
Where ??? is some main windows dll file, whose name eludes me at the
moment. I have a 486dx40 system, and everything worked fine (as fine as
computers work anyway) untill I put in that second HDD. I have a Seagate
260 Meg as my master (C:) and I recently added a Conner Periperals 80 Meg
jobbie as the slave (D:). I also have a Panasonic 2x cdrom hooked to the
GUS MAX, if that matters. I didn't move any of my boot software (DOS
6.22) or any of my gus utilities to the Conner drive. Come to think of
it, I didn't move anything vital to that drive... just my comm package,
a few utils, a few games, and some miscelaneous archived garbage.
Another wierd thing that happened since I put in the drive is that my
computer will not tolerate my pressing the reset button. I can do the
CTRL-ALT-DEL boot, or I can physically interupt the power supply to
reboot, but if I press the reset key, I get HDD failure messages,
although both drives have passed rigorous testing. I'm at a loss.
Really, the only thing I want to know is why the MIDI player in Sound
Station won't work anymore. The WAV and CD parts still work fine, and
Midisoft still works. Strange, no?
Also, if anyone knows how to propperly set up News Express news reader
for WIndows, could you let me know? I get that CTRL3DV2.DLL not set
up properly error when it starts, and it will let me do everything
but post articles. Strange things.
Cheers,
AC

Subject: script to split a GUS-digest
Did you ever feel the need to split a GUS-digest into seperate mail
messages? So that you can remove or file messages by topic? Remove
those stupid quotes of an entire digest? I did, and I wrote a perl
script to do the job. I tested it with the digest of the past few
weeks, and it workes without a hitch on them.
It takes as input an (unformatted) digest, and generates to stdout the
splitted digest in maildrop format. If you save this script as
'refgus.prl' and if you use mh for reading mail, then you can use the
sh script below to incorporate the generated messages automatically
into your inbox folder.
Hopefully my effort is usable for more than one person :-)

I remember reading in a Rise of the Triad manual that, while they had
implemented a real time voice input and output in modem games, that
Apogee would probably never get it to work with a GUS. I'm not exactly
sure why, I think that it had something to do with the fact that the GUS
takes sounds into its memory before outputting them.
Please correct me if I am wrong, but a think it will probably take at
least a special patch to make iphone work.

>....then the volume drops from 80% to 30-40%.
>I can bring up the mixer and change the settings, but it

I had this problem too, and figured it out to be a problem with my CD-ROM
drivers. When I installed my CD-ROM (a NEC 2vi--great drive BTW), it found my
gus and said "Hey, we would recommend you use a different mixer. Can I install
it for you?". I answered yes, and away it went. Everything worked 100% right
off, but then wav files stopped playing in Windows 3.11. Huh? After an hour or
so, I found that they WERE playing, just muted by the mixer being down to 41%.
I reset them, and everything worked fine--until the next time I ran Windows,
when they went right back to 41%. Manual editing or mixer changes made no
difference. AS that driver was the only NEW thing in my system.ini, I removed
it to see what happened--and lo and behold, that solved it! Mixer settings stay
where they are supposed to.
The only difference I have found with removing that driver, is that the .wav
file played when MS Cinemania starts up plays-stops-plays-stops. All other CD's
(MS Encarta, MS baseball, SI year in review, KQ7) all work fine--no problems
with audio.
Neil, check to see if you have a cd-rom driver/mixer being loaded in your
system.ini file. I can't remember the name of it, but if you can't find it,
let me know and I can re-install and get the name of mine....
Good luck!
BTW, the NEC 2vi is about the best 2x drive I have seen. It came with it's own
interface card, and an audio card that hooked straight to the gus audio pins.
The whole install took me about 10 minutes, complete with a very easy driver
install. I'd highly recommend this drive to all the gussers here! (It's way
faster that a buddies Panasonic, and a sony, due to it's 256k cache on the
drive itself. Very cool!
